Christchurch Bells
Henry Aldrich, 1673
Here are the words as published in the Second Book of the Catch Club, London, 1733 and reprinted in Keller & Schimer's The Playford Ball, p. 19.
- Hark the bonny Christ Church Bells,
- 1,2,3,4,5,6, they sound so woundy great [woundy:very or extremely]
- So wonderous sweet
- And they troll so merrily merrily.
-
- Hark, the first and second Bell,
- That every day at Four and Ten,
- Cries come, come, come, come, come to Pray'rs
- And the Verger troops before the Dean.
-
- Tingle, tingle, ting, goes the small bell at nine,
- To call the Bearers home [bearer:probably a porter]
- But de'il a man will leave his Can, [can:probably a drinking vessel]
- Till he hears the mighty Tom. [See note.]
Note: According to the OED Tom is a name given generally to very large bells. In this cast, of course, it's Tom of Christchurch.
